About
The Urban Games and Hip Hop was founded in early 2010 by Solar Learning and is one of 9 regional NE GENERATION projects funded by Legacy Trust UK, Arts Council England.
The project is a 3-year programme focussing on urban art, hip hop, and extreme sports. It is a youth-led project culminating in annual Urban Games events with opportunities for youth leadership, participation, and volunteering.
The Urban Games and Hip Hop provide workshops and showcase events in street dancing, break dancing, singing, rapping, DJing, BMXing, skateboarding, and freerunning/Parkour. At the annual Urban Games events we also run competitions and tournaments.
We want to create a lasting sporting and cultural legacy, building on the work of the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games. We have engaged young people leading up to the Olympics through our 3 key principles:
- COMPETITION: Delivering an annual high profile Urban Games and Hip Hop event with medal contests for new and experienced young talent in the Games’ disciplines.
- PARTICIPATION: Offering workshops and Skills Schools, a youth leadership steering group responsible for designing and delivering the programme, a youth media team who utilise social media, online activity, and marketing and design.
- PERFORMANCE: The Urban G’s performance team composed of young talent and beginners, who seek to develop their skills and perform at events linked to the programme. The programme also provides a showcase performance at the annual Urban Games and Hip Hop event.
